Karaoke (卡拉OK) was developed in Asia and is now popular throughout the world. If you visit a Karaoke bar in a Mandarin Chinese-speaking country, you will probably be asked to chàng gē – sing songs.

Chàng gē has two characters. The first, 唱 chàng, means “to sing,” or “to call loudly.” The second character, 歌 gē, simply means “song.”

As with all Mandarin nouns, there is no difference between singular and plural,” so chàng gē can mean “sing a song,” or “sing songs.”
