When you chat (liáotiān) with your Mandarin-speaking friends, you will likely hear some juicy gossip. If so, you might mention to someone that you have heard (tīngshuō) some news.
Tīngshuō has two characters: 聽說 (traditional) 听说 (simplified). The first one, tīng, means “to hear,” and the second character, shuō, means “to say.”
The literal translation of tīngshuō is “heard tell.”
