A Brain-paralyzed Poet

A Chinese woman, who suffers from brain paralysis, is being hailed as China’s Emily Dickinson, after one of her poems went viral on the Internet.

Yu Xiuhua is an ordinary farmer(普通的农民) from Hengdian, in Hubei Province. She began writing in 2009 purely as a hobby(爱好). But little did she know that one day she would become a rage(走红) across the nation.

As soon as her latest poem, roughly translated as “Crossing Half China to Sleep with You”(《穿过大半个中国去睡你》), was posted online, it became an instant hit(流行).

Such was the power of her words that popular feminist scholar(女权主义者) Shen Rui hailed(称赞)her as China’ s Emily Dickinson.

There are many who concur with(同意) Shen in celebrating Yu’ s writings. “Even though she’s suffering from brain paralysis, it has not impaired her ability to think clearly,” wrote one commentator.

But there are those who have been going through the words with a fine comb. They’ ve criticized(批评) her literary skills(文学技能) and the rhymes(韵脚).

Here is Yu’s poem. Do tell us which side of the argument you are on.
