Cultural Background

Public transport of Beijing

Beijing has an extensive systemof buses, electric cablecars and taxis, with the various routes traveling toall destinations. The Beijing Public Transport Corporation operates a total of over 700 routes. The No.1~122 routes are city routes and tickets cost 1 Yuan; the No.300~949 routes are suburban routes and cost 1 Yuan for distances within 12 kilometres, it is an extra 0.5 Yuan for every extra 5 kilometres; routes that start with "8" are air-conditioned buses and cost 2 Yuan; while fares for double decker buses with routes starting with the Chinese character for "special" cost 2 Yuan; similarly there are travel buses marked with the Chinese character for "travel " and fares vary depending on the destination; normal bus routes start with "6,7,8,9 "; routes starting with "9 " are the longest, even as long as 106 kilometers. Bus operation times are usually from 5am to 11pm, after which some late night buses run but there are very few.

Foreigners new to Beijing should note that the city's buses come in express or normal modes, be sure to check that your destination will be stopped at, before getting on the bus.

Also, some buses may only travel one way, while others may travel around certain areas, some buses do not have conductors and only coin-operated fare machines. There are also buses without conductors so get your change ready for the vending machine. It's a good idea to buy a transport map and read it closely for all the details.

Vehicles travel on the right-hand side of the road in China. So to avoid taking the wrong bus, please check the direction the bus is going in.

Beijing's subway system is a convenient and comfortable way of getting around. Spot them by looking out for the blue logo with the letters BD. There is a loop line and a straight line in the subway system, there are transfer stations at Fuxingmen and Jian'guomen. The No.1 subway line travels from Xidan to Pingguoyuan of Shijingshan District in the city's west; the No.2 line is the loop line and starts at Jian'guomen; the No.3 line is from Xidan to Jian'guomean. Tickets are 3 Yuan each no matter wher you're traveling to. The subway starts at 5:00 am and ends at 11:40 pm.

Pedicabs have gained popularity in Beijing along with the surge in tourism, they are run by private operators but collectively managed. They can be found and hailed at train stations or other transport hubs and tourist attractions around the city. If you see them on the street they are also available for hire. Their slightly higher cost is compensated for by the convenience in seeing the sights at a slower pace. Registered pedicabs should have licenses on the handle and the operator should be wearing a service badge.
