请拿菜单来, Please bring me the menu. 来一只烤鸭, Please bring me a roast duck., 一碗汤a bowl of soup, and一碗米饭a bowl of rice. 你要买什么蔬菜? What kind of vegetable do you want to buy? 请问,购物车在哪儿?Excuse me, wher is the trolley?
YJ: 菜单 is menu. 请拿菜单来, Please bring me the menu. Cam, how about 来一只烤鸭?
Cam: Remember, if you want to order a dish, you can use 来 which means to bring.
YJ: Right. And 一只烤鸭, a roast duck
Cam:一只烤鸭. (yi zhi kao ya) One roast duck.
YJ: 来一只烤鸭, please bring me a roast duck.
Cam: lai yi zhi kao ya.
YJ: And we’d better also have a bowl of soup.
Cam: That’s 来一碗汤 ( lai3 yi1 wan3 tang1). 碗 means ‘bowl’. 汤(tang1), soup.
YJ: Very good. And now a test for our listeners: how do you say two bowls of rice?
Cam: Here is the hint: Rice is mi3 fan4.

YJ: 我要买三个西红柿Three is 三(san1). Tomato is西红柿(xi1 hong2 shi4). Together it’s我要买三个西红柿.(wo3 yao4 mai3 san1 ge4 xi1 hong2 shi4)
Cam: 我要买三个西红柿. (wo3 yao4 mai3 san1 ge4 xi1 hong2 shi4)
Yajie: And你要买什么水果(ni3 yao4 mai3 shen2 me shui3 guo3)? What fruit do you want to buy?
Cam: 我要买一个西瓜(wo3 yao4 mai3 yi1 ge xi1 gua1)。I want to buy a watermelon. 一个西瓜(yi1 ge xi1 gua1), a watermelon.
Yajie: Right. Then Cam, what’s the meaning of “Which meat do you want to buy?”.
Cam: Meat in Chinese is 肉,( rou4), the fourth tone. So that would be你要买什么肉(ni3 yao4 mai3 shen2 me rou4)?
YJ: I want to buy a piece of beef.我要买一块牛肉 (wo3 yao4 mai3 yi1 kuai4 niu2 rou4)。
Cam: 我要买一块牛肉 (wo3 yao4 mai3 yi1 kuai4 niu2 rou4)。

Cam: 请问,购物车在哪儿(qing3 wen4, gou4 wu4 che1 zai4 nar3)?Excuse me, wher is the trolley?
Yajie: Trolley, 购物车 (gou4 wu4 che1).请问(qing3 wen4), “Excuse me”. “在哪儿”(zai4 nar3) means at wher. 请问,购物车在哪儿?
Cam: I was told that trolleys are to the left of the entrance.
Yajie: That’s 在入口左边(zai4 ru4 kou3 zuo3 bian1). 入口(ru4 kou3), entrance. 在左边(zai4 zuo3 bian1),to the left.
Cam: Yajie, In English, we can also ask this question in this way. “Could you tell me wher the trolley is?” How do you say it in Chinese.
YJ: 您能告诉我购物车在哪儿吗(nin2 neng2 gao4 su4 wo3 gou4 wu4 che1 zai4 nar3 ma)?
Cam: 您(nin2) also means ‘you’. It’s a more polite way than ‘你’ (ni3).
YJ: And 能 means could. 告诉, to tell. 您能告诉我购物车在哪儿吗(nin2 neng2 gao4 su4 wo3 gou4 wu4 che1 zai4 nar3 ma)?
