Mo Yan “with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary.” — The Nobel Committee

Mo Yan (a pseudonym for Guan Moye) is a famous contemporary Chinese writer who was born on February 17, 1955 in Gaomi county, Shandong Province. He is an honorary PhD of Arts at the Open University of Hong Kong and a Guest Professor at the Qingdao University of Technology. In the mid-1980s, he rose to fame as a writer in China. With complex feelings of homesickness and simultaneous resentment of the homeland, his works were classified as root-seeking literature. His works were also deeply influenced by hallucinatory realism. In his works, the unique subjective world he built, the unconstrained and imaginary narration, the approach of alienation, and the mysterious and transcendent objective world he shaped were apparent proofs of being avant-garde. His novel “Frog” won the 8th Mao Dun Literature Prize in August 2011. On October 11, 2012, the Nobel Prize in Literature 2012 was awarded to Mo Yan who “with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary”.
