Hu Shih 胡适

胡适（1891.12.17-1962.2.24），汉族，徽州绩溪县上庄村人。现代著名学者、诗人、历史家、文学家、哲学家。因提倡文学革命而成为新文化运动的领袖之一。字希疆，后改名胡适，字适之，适与适之之名与字，乃取自当时盛行的达尔文学说“物竞天择适者生存”典故。
Hu Shih (also spelt as Hu Shi) (December 17,1891 - February 24, 1962), Han Nationality, a native of Shangzhuang Village, Jixi County, Huizhou, was a prestigious modern scholar, poet, historian, litterateur and philosopher. Hu became one of the leading figures of New Culture Movement for advocating Literary Revolution. His former courtesy name was Xijiang and he changed his name to Hu Shih, with a new courtesy name of Shih-chih. Shih (literally, fit) was taken from Darwinian Theory of “survival of the fittest in natural selection” which was very popular at that time.
