吃闭门羹 Find the door closed
【注音】chī bì mén gēng
【解释】你去拜访某人,人家不在家或不欢迎你而不让你进屋,这就是“吃了闭门羹”。
When you call on someone but find the door closed, or you are not welcomed, this is called chi bi men geng.
【例子】
例:
A:昨天我去你们家玩儿,可是吃了闭门羹。
B:昨天什么时候?
A:下午两点。
B:昨天下午我们去钓鱼了。
Ex.:
A:I went to visit you yesterday but there’s nobody home.

吃醋 Be jealous
【注音】chī cù
【解释】比喻产生嫉妒情绪,特别是异性之间。一个人看见自己的男(女)朋友和别的异性朋友谈得亲热的的时候,就会产生一种情绪,象是一口气喝了一大碗酸醋似的,正式名称是嫉妒。
This is used as a metaphor for the feeling of jealousy, especially between the opposite sex. When people see his girl (or her boy) friend is having fun intimately with another boy (girl), a strong feeling will arise as swallowing down a big bowl of vinegar. That is “jealous”in a formal term.
【例子】
例1:
A:我建议你最好不要跟那个“小白脸”来往。
B:怎么,吃醋了?
Ex1.:
A:I would suggest you stop having dealings with that effeminate young man.
B:Why, you are jealous?

例2:老张的夫人喜欢吃醋,大家都叫她醋坛子。
Ex2.:Lao Zhang’s wife is a jealous woman with a nickname of a “vinegar jar”.
