YJ: Cam, it’s our movie week on CS. What did you think?
Cam: It’s been great! I learned a lot of useful words. But I need a review if I want to put them into real conversation. 
YJ: Ok. Let’s first listen to Sentences in the Week.
 

Sentences in the Week
movie, 电影,  movie star. 电影明星,comedy喜剧，tragedy.悲剧 horror movie恐怖片，animation动画片,blockbuster. 大片 Are there any new blockbusters coming out soon? 最近有什么新的大片？ All in today’s Chinese Studio.

YJ：Cam, what’s the Chinese for movie, do you still remember that?
Cam: It’s电影( dian4 ying3)
YJ: Right, 电影( dian4 ying3).
Cam: Then I’m wondering how to say “movie star”?
YJ: We mentioned that star is 明星(dian4 ying3).
Cam: 明星(ming2 xing1).
YJ: 明 (ming2) means bright, 
Cam: 明 (ming2).
YJ: 星(xing1) originally means a star in the sky.
Cam: 星.(xing1)
YJ: Here a bright star stands for a famous actor or actress. 明星(ming2 xing1)
Cam: I see. 明星(ming2 xing1).
YJ: Then a movie star would be…
Cam: 电影明星(dian4 ying3 ming2 xing1)！Got it.
YJ: Very good. 电影明星(dian4 ying3 ming2 xing1).

Conversation1:
A：这是我最喜欢的电影！
B：为什么？
A：因为这部电影里有我最喜欢的电影明星。

YJ: OK, first one, comedy
Cam:喜剧. Because 喜means happy in Chinese.
YJ: Good, then followed by tragedy, which is …
Cam: 悲剧.  
YJ: Good beginning. What’s the genre of the famous film “the Shining”?
Cam: I’m sure it’s 恐怖片(kong3 bu4 pian1) ,horror film.
YJ: Right. 恐怖片(kong3 bu4 pian1) 恐怖(kong3 bu4) means horrified, scary,
Cam: 恐怖 (kong3 bu4 )
YJ: 片 (pian1) means film
Cam: 片( pian1),
YJ: 恐怖片(kong3 bu4 pian1), horror movie,
Cam: 恐怖片 (kong3 bu4 pian1).
YJ: Cam, what’s the Chinese for an animation?
Cam: it’s 动画片(dong4 hua4 pian1)
YJ: Very good!

A：我爱看喜剧，你呢?
B：我也爱看喜剧。我不喜欢悲剧。
A: 除了喜剧，我还喜欢恐怖片。
B: 我喜欢动画片。

YJ: Cam, do you still remember the Chinese for blockbuster?
Cam: it’s 大片 (da4 pian1)  
YJ: Good, 大片  (da4 pian1) , which literally means big film. Here it’s an informal way of calling a large-budget movie with widespread popularity.
Cam: Right, 大片(da4 pian1). Yajie, could you repeat how to say “Are there any new blockbusters coming out soon?”
YJ: It’s 最近有什么新的大片？(zui4 jin4 you3 shen2me xin1 de da4 pian1)
Cam: 最近有什么新的大片？(zui4 jin4 you3 shen2me xin1 de da4 pian1)
YJ: 最近(zui4 jin4 ) means recently.
Cam: 最近 (zui4 jin4 ).
YJ: 有什么?(you3 shen2me) Is there anything?
Cam: 有什么(you3 shen2me)
YJ: 新的 (xin1de ), new
Cam: 新的(xin1de )
YJ: 大片 (da4 pian1), blockbuster
Cam: 大片(da4 pian1)
