The palaces and temples of Wudang Mountain Ancient Architectural Cluster fully embody the architectural and artistic attainments of worldly and religious buildings throughout Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties of China. The architectural cluster towers at the foot of the picturesque, valley-dotted Wudang Mountain in Hubei Province. It gradually grew to assume the present scale, with Taoist architectures that can be dated back to the Seventh Century B. C. These architectures symbolize the highest level of achievements of Chinese art and architecture over a thousand years.
Lying in the southwest of Danjiangkou, Hubei Province in the central part of China, Wudang Mountain is also known as The Mountain of Supreme Harmony. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD), Wudang Mountain was successively named Greater Mountain and Super Mountain by the emperors, exceeding mountains like Five Major Mountains in rank. The Peak of Heavenly Pillar, the major peak of Wudang Mountain, is 1,612.1m above the seal level, with sceneries of Seventy-two Peaks, Thirty-six Rocks and Twenty-four Springs around it. The views are charming and grandiose, receiving complement like Gathering of Ten Thousand Mountains from people throughout the ages.
Wudang Mountain Ancient Architectural Cluster was first built during the reign of Emperor Zhenguan in the Tang Dynasty (627-649 AD).
