Heavy Smog Shrouds NE China 雾霾

Since heat supply was available in northeast China a week ago, thick smog has blanketed many cities in the region and air quality has reached extremely hazardous levels in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province.

based on data(数据) released by the environmental protection agency of Liaoning province, the PM2.5 index even exceeded 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter on November 8. The safe（安全的) level for human health(人体健康) is 25 micrograms per cubic meter.

Unfortunately, the local government didn't publish any warning information on its website ahead of time, and the website of the environmental protection agency crashed(瘫痪) for two hours on the day. It wasn't until that afternoon that the local government finally issued the highest alert（最高级别预警) on Weibo.

Experts are saying the pollution(污染) is primarily the result of heat supply(供暖) in northeast China, since most places in the region still use coal(煤) for heating. Emissions from factories and cars are also possible causes for air pollution.
