James:  Wo shi Jame. Yajie, I heard that Cam went on a vacation to the Hawaiian Islands.
Yajie:  Yes, and I heard that he did some swimming!
James: That’s right, I also love swimming. So this week, we are going to learn all about swimming.

James: So Yajie, let’s start with some basic words about swimming.
Yajie: Ok, our first Chinese word today is 游泳池(you2yong3 chi2), which means swimming pool.
James: 游泳池(you2yong3 chi2).
Yajie: 游泳 (you2yong3) means swim, the second tone, and the third tone
James: 游泳 (you2yong3)
Yajie: And 池 (chi2) means  pool.
James: 池 (chi2), chi, the second tone, right?
Yajie: Yes. Together it’s游泳池(you2yong3 chi2)
James: 游泳池(you2yong3 chi2), swimming pool. 
Yajie: Now the second word is 跳水(tiao4 shui3).
James: 跳水(tiao4 shui3). What does that mean?
Yajie: It means to dive.
James: 跳水(tiao4 shui3), diving.
Yajie: Right. 跳 (tiao4) means to jump.
James: 跳 (tiao4)
Yajie: 水 (shui3) is water.
James:  水 (shui3)
Yajie: 跳水(tiao4 shui3) means to jump into the water, and that’s diving.
James: I see. 跳水(tiao4 shui3), diving.
Yajie: And the Chinese for diving board is跳板(tiao4 ban3)
James: 跳板(tiao4 ban3)
Yajie: 板 (ban3), ban, the third tone, which means board.
James: 板 (ban3)
Yajie: 跳板(tiao4 ban3), the board for diving, and that's diving board.
James:  跳板(tiao4 ban3)

James: Yajie, the water in the swimming pool is too cold for me. How do I complain that in Chinese?
Yajie: well, you can say水太凉了(shui3 tai4 liang2 le)。
James: 水太凉了(shui3 tai4 liang2 le).
Yajie: 水 (shui3) is water.
James: 水 (shui3).
Yajie: 太 (tai4), too.
James: 太 (tai4)
Yajie: 凉 (liang2), here means cold .
James: 凉 (liang2)
Yajie: 水太凉了(shui3 tai4 liang2 le), the water is too cold

Yajie: Now the Chinese for hot is 热 (re4).
James: 热 (re4).
YJ: So if the water is too hot, you can say “水太热了。(shui3 tai4 re4 le.)”
James: 水太热了。(shui3 tai4 re4 le.)
