Cam: Hello, dajia hao. Welcome to Chinese Studio on China Radio International.  I’m Cam.
YJ:  And I’m Yajie. This week we’ve mainly focused on making appointments.  It’s something that foreigners in Beijing need to do sometimes.
Cam: And it’s been very useful!  Thanks Yajie.  So let’s review our Sentences in the Week.
 

Sentences of the Week
I’d like to see Mr. Wang. 我想见王先生(wo3 xiang3 jian4 wang2 xian1sheng)。Are you free tonight? 今天晚上有时间吗?(jin1tian1 wan3shang you3 shi2jian1 ma?) wher shall we meet? And what time? 咱们在哪儿见?几点?(zan2men zai4 na3er jian4?ji3 dian3?)All in today’s Chinese Studio.

Yajie:  Cam, do you remember what’s Chinese for “I’d like to see”?
Cam: Yes. It’s “我想见(wo3 xiang3 jian4)…”
YJ: Right. It’s我想见(wo3 xiang3 jian)… 想 (xiang3), would like to.
Cam: 想 (xiang3)
YJ: And 见(jian4)means to see.
Cam: 见(jian4)
YJ: 我想见(wo3 xiang3 jian4)
Cam: 我想见(wo3 xiang3 jian4), I’d like to see.
YJ: Then you can put the person’s name after it. For instance, if you want to see Mr. Wang, you can say “我想见王先生(wo3 xiang3 jian4 wang2 xian1sheng)”
Cam: Ok. Not difficult. 我想见王先生(wo3 xiang3 jian4 wang2 xian1sheng)I’d like to see Mr. Wang.

Conversation1:
 
Cam: Yajie, before making appointments I need to ask if he/she is free. So what’s the Chinese for “Are you free tonight”?
YJ:  今天晚上有时间吗?(jin1tian1 wan3shang you3 shi2jian1 ma?)
Cam: 今天晚上有时间吗?(jin1tian1 wan3shang you3 shi2jian1 ma?)
YJ: 今天晚上(jin1tian1 wan3shang), tonight.
Cam: 今天晚上(jin1tian1 wan3shang).
YJ: 有时间(you3 shi2jian1) means “ to have some time”.
Cam: 有时间(you3 shi2jian1). 
YJ: Right. 今天晚上有时间吗?(jin1tian1 wan3shang you3 shi2jian1 ma?) Are you free tonight?
Cam: 今天晚上有时间吗?(jin1tian1 wan3shang you3 shi2jian1 ma?)
 
Yajie: Also you may discuss with someone about the place and time. You can say 咱们在哪儿见?几点?(zan2men zai4 na3er jian4?ji3 dian3?)
Cam: 咱们在哪儿见?几点?(zan2men zai4 na3er jian4?ji3 dian3?)wher shall we meet? And what time?
YJ: Yes. 咱们(zan2men)means we.
Cam: 咱们(zan2men)
YJ: 见 (jian4), to meet.
Cam: 见 (jian4). J-i-a-n, the fourth tone, right?
YJ: Yes. So wher shall we meet would be: 咱们在哪儿见?(zan2men zai4 na3er jian4?)
Cam: 咱们在哪儿见?(zan2men zai4 na3er jian4?)
YJ: And what time in Chinese is几点?(ji3 dian3)
Cam: 几点?(ji3 dian3)
YJ: Yes. Now let’s put it together it’s咱们在哪儿见?几点?(zan2men zai4 na3er jian4?ji3 dian3?)When and wher shall we meet?
Cam:  咱们在哪儿见?几点?(zan2men zai4 na3er jian4?ji3 dian3?) 

Conversation2:
 
Cam: Yajie, I would like to pick up a girl at half past five.So how do I tell her that in Chinese?
YJ: It’s “五点半我来接你。(wu3 dian3 ban4 wo3 lai2 jie3 ni3.)”.
Cam: 五点半我来接你。(wu3 dian3 ban4 wo3 lai2 jie3 ni3.)
YJ: 五点半 (wu3 dian3 ban4) is half past five.
Cam: 五点半 (wu3 dian3 ban4
YJ: 我 (wo3), I.
Cam: 我 (wo3).
YJ: 来 (lai2), to come.
Cam: 来(lai2).
YJ: 接 (jie1), to pick up somebody. The first tone.
Cam: 接(jie1)
YJ: 你 (ni3) is you.
Cam: 你 (ni3)
YJ: 五点半我来接你。(wu3 dian3 ban4 wo3 lai2 jie3 ni3.)
Cam: 五点半我来接你。(wu3 dian3 ban4 wo3 lai2 jie3 ni3.) I will pick you up at 5:30.
