Lesson 173--In a Bar 1

Cam:  It’s time to perfect Chinese your way in only five minutes a day… welcome to Chinese Studio.  Wo shi Cam.
YJ:  And wo shi Yajie.  Cam, what is your favorite drink at the bar?
Cam: Well, I always order a pi jiu, beer, because I don’t know how to say anything else in Chinese!
YJ:  This week will be a big help to you then.  Let’s start with Key Words of the Day. 

Key Words of the Day 
“I’d like a scotch.” 我要一杯苏格兰威士忌 “On the rocks?” 要加冰吗？ I want it straight. 不加冰 Red wine红葡萄酒  White wine. 白葡萄酒dry red wine, 干红All in today’s Chinese Studio.

Cam:  Okay Yajie, let’s say I walk into a bar, sit down at the counter, and tell the bartender I’d like a scotch.
Yajie:  Sure… you can say “我要一杯苏格兰威士忌”
Cam:  wo3 yao4 yi4 bei1 su1 ge2 lan2 wei1 shi4 ji4. 
YJ: wo3 yao4, I’d like to have, 
Cam: wo3 yao4.
YJ: yi4 bei1, one glass of, 
Cam: yi4 bei1. 
YJ: su1 ge2 lan2 means Scotland.
Cam:su1 ge2 lan2  
YJ: wei1 shi4 ji4, whisky, 
Cam: wei1 shi4 ji4. Right, scotch is short for scotch whiskey. 
YJ: wo3 yao4 yi4 bei1 su1 ge2 lan2 wei1 shi4 ji4
Cam: wo3 yao4 yi4 bei1 su1 ge2 lan2 wei1 shi4 ji4 I’d like a scotch.

Conversation1:
A：请问您喝点儿什么？
B：我要一杯苏格兰威士忌
A：请稍等，马上就来
B：谢谢。

YJ:  He may ask, on the rocks?  Which is 要加冰吗？
Cam:  yao4 jia1 bing1 ma?
YJ: yao4 is short for xu1 yao4, which means do you need?
Cam: yao4.
YJ: jia1, to put into, or to add, 
Cam: jia1.
YJ: bing1 is ice, 
Cam: bing1
YJ: yao4 jia1 bing1 ma?
Cam: yao4 jia1 bing1 ma? On the rocks?  And then I’d say I want it straight. What’s the Chinese for that? 
YJ: you can say 不加冰。 
Cam: bu4 jia1 bing1. 
YJ: bu4 means no, don’t do something,
Cam: bu4,
YJ: bu4 jia1, don’t put in…
Cam: bu4 jia1, 
YJ: bing1 is ice, 
Cam: bing1. 
YJ: bu4 jia1 bing1. 
Cam: bu4 jia1 bing1. I want it straight. 

Conversation2:
A：请问您喝点儿什么？
B：我要一杯苏格兰威士忌
A：要加冰吗？
B：不加冰.

Cam:  So tell me a couple more drinks… what is white wine and red wine?
YJ:  white wine is 白葡萄酒，
Cam:  bai2 pu2tao2 jiu3. 
YJ: white in Chinese is bai2,
Cam: bai2, 
YJ: pu2 tao2 means grape, 
Cam: pu2 tao2
YJ: jiu3, means alcohol, 
Cam: jiu3
Y: pu2tao2 jiu3, wine 
C: pu2tao2 jiu3 
YJ: bai2 pu2tao2 jiu3white wine 
Cam: bai2 pu2tao2 jiu3. Then I know how to say red wine if you tell me the Chinese for red.
YJ: Sure. red is hong2, 
Cam: hong2. then red wine is hong2 pu2tao2 jiu3. 红葡萄酒one last question for today, could you tell me how to say dry red wine. 
YJ: no problem. It’s gan1 hong2 pu2tao2 jiu3
Cam:  gan1 hong2 pu2tao2 jiu3
YJ: since dry in Chinese is gan1. 
Cam: I see. gan1 hong2 pu2tao2 jiu3
Y: or you can just say gan1 hong2 for short. 
C: gan1 hong2 干红.

Conversation3:
 
A: 这里有白葡萄酒和红葡萄酒, 你要哪种？
B: 我想喝干红。
