shàng xíng xià xiào
As those above do, so do those below
As the old cock crows, so doth the young. Chinese idiom 上行下效 – "as those above do, so do those below" – describes the great influence brought on by higher authorities. 上, refers to people in higher positions, or with great influence, 行 means do something, 下, refers to common people here, or the subjects of the higher authorities, and 效 means imitate.
Literal meaning: As those above do, so do those below
