The film Spring River Flows East was shot and produced in 1947. A number of celebrated stars of that time, such as Bai Yang, Tao Jin, Shu Xiuwen and Shangguan Yunzhu, gathered in this film. Its public exhibition in October 1947 in Shanghai evoked wild enthusiasm. It was on for over three months successively, and created the highest attendance record for homemade films before the liberation. Playwright Tian Han reviewed once that “considering the simple conditions in the film circles of China, such (achievements) can be regarded as the top achievement of our filmmakers.”
The film Spring River Flows East consists of two episodes: 8-year Turmoil and Before and After the Daybreak. It telescopes the 10-year history before and after the Anti-Japanese War into a common family, and exquisitely depicts the social scenario at that time through the family’s cracked life and emotional experiences.
