The Legend of the Double Ninth Festival 重阳节的传说

关于重阳节，在中国的民间流传着一个广为人知的故事。据说，在古代有个叫桓景的人，他跟着得道的神仙费长房学习仙术。有一天，费长房告诉桓景，农历九月初九，一场灾难将会降临他的家乡，他必须立即赶回去。并且，叮嘱他为每一个家人做一个红色囊袋，并且折一个茱萸枝插在上面，把囊袋系在胳膊上，然后带着大家快速登上最高的山顶。最重要的是，大家都要喝一点菊花酒。
There is a widely known legend about the Double Ninth Festival that has spread among Chinese folk people. It is said that there was a man called Huan Jing in ancient times who learnt magic arts with Fei Zhangfang, a master immortal. One day, Fei Zhangfang told Huan Jing that a disaster would happen to his hometown on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, so he had to hurry home. In addition, Fei advised him to make a red sachet for each of his family member and put a dogwood sprig on the sachets before tying them on his family members’ arms and immediately climbing to the highest mountaintop together. It was the most important thing that everyone should also drink some chrysanthemum wine.
听了这些，桓景赶紧回家，按照师傅的交代做了每一件事。大家登上了最近的高山，一直呆到傍晚才回家。当他们回家时，发现所有的动物都死了。费长房后来告诉他，这些家禽和牲畜都是代替你的家人死去了，他们通过这种方式逃过了灾难。
After hearing this, Huan Jing hurried home and did everything that his master required. Everyone climbed to the nearest mountain and did not return home until the nightfall. When they returned home, they found all animals were dead. After that, Fei Zhangfang told him these poultries and livestock died instead of the family members. They survived the disaster in this way.
从那以后，登山、佩戴茱萸、喝菊花酒成了重阳节的传统习俗，用来驱灾避祸。
From then on, climbing mountains, wearing dogwood sprigs and drinking the chrysanthemum wine have been important customs of the Double Ninth Festival to avoid disaster and remove ill fortune.
