A newly published(新发表的) study(研究) finds(发现) that exercising(锻炼) in older age can help keep(保持) one's immune system(免疫系统) active(活跃) and young(年轻).
Researchers in Britain followed(跟踪) 125 cyclists(骑行者) over the age of 55 and found that they had immune systems of 20-year-olds.
The researchers found these cyclists have higher levels of freshly made T-cells, which play an important role(角色) in one's immune response(响应), such as recognizing(识别) and killing(杀死) foreign invaders.
Professor Janet Lord, director of the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham and a co-author of the study, said "the immune system declines(减少) by about 2-3 percent a year from our 20s, which is why older people are more susceptible to infections(感染), conditions like rheumatoid arthritis(类风湿性关节炎) and, potentially, cancer(癌症)."
The research was published in the journal Aging Cell.
