(单词翻译:双击或拖选)
Simon likes eating outside because of all the varieties of delicious Chinese food. More important, some Chinese people like chatting while eating, so Simon has more opportunities to practice his listening skills. In this instance, however, he is completely confused.

dà wěi  shuō tā xǐ huān  nà gè  dà  yǎn jīng  de  nǚ hái ér
A:大伟 说她喜欢 那个 大 眼睛 的 女孩儿。
Da Wei told me he likes that girl who has big eyes.

bú guò tā hǎo xiàng  shì  yī  gè  huā  qián  dà shǒu  dà jiǎo  de  rén
B: 不过她好像 是 一 个 花 钱 大手 大脚 的 人。
But it seems she is very extravagant with money.

zhēn de ma ?lì lì shì tā shì yǒu ,yīng gāi zhī dào ba ?
A: 真的吗?丽丽是她室友,应该知道吧?
Really? Lily is her roommate, and she must be very familiar with her.

xū ,bú yào  gào sù tā ,tā  shì  gè  dà  zuǐ bā !
B: 嘘,不要 告诉她,她 是 个 大 嘴巴!
Shhh, don’t let her know about this, because she is a blabbermouth.

In this dialogue, there are many “”(big), which are used to describe parts of the body including 眼睛(eyes), 手(hands),脚(feet),嘴巴(mouth),but not all of them refer to the literal meaning.

Generally, the word “大” (dà) means big; for example “大眼睛“ means big eyes. However, on some occasions when the word “大(dà)” is combined with certain characters, it can create words with new meanings, such as “大手大脚(dà shǒu dà jiǎo)” and “大嘴巴(dà zuǐ bā).”

Literally, “大手大脚(dàshǒu dàjiǎo)” means big hands and big feet, but its meaning in usage is more idiomatic than literal. It means that one is wasteful and very extravagant with money. “大嘴巴(dà zuǐba) literally means big mouth. We usually use it to indicate that someone cannot keep a secret and often spreads gossip widely. In other words, the person is a blabbermouth.
