Zongzi (traditional Chinese rice dumpling) is a kind of food eaten during the Duanwu Festival. Either in local areas, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or in overseas Chinatown, zongzi of all kinds will be prepared before the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar according to tradition to welcome and embrace the festival.
But do you know that zongzi has a long history and in “Word and expression” written by Xu Shen of the Han Dynasty, there are records about zongzi, a kind of food that uses reed leaf to wrap up rice.
But in ancient times, zongzi is called as Jiao Shu (angular millet).
After the Ming and Qing Dynasties, zongzi is made of sticky rice. Then the name Jiao Shu is abandoned and replaced by zongzi.
The materials and leaves vary region by region. Even the shape differs vastly. For instance, in early days, ox horn is popular in sacrifice, so zongzi in the Han and Jin Dynasties were made to angular shape as supplies used in ancestor worship. In addition, regular triangle, regular quadrangle, pointed triangle, square and rectangle, among other shapes were recorded.
Besides, the taste of zongzi also varies region by region. There are many shops selling zongzi on streets in Chang’an in the Tang Dynasty, offering various kinds of nutlet stuffing.
