Shifan music · Chating Shifan music
Nominating unit[s]: Fuzhou City, Fujian Province
Chating Shifan music was originated from Chating Street, Taijiang District, Fuzhou City. It was recorded in Zhuzhici of Night of Rongcheng in Chixuzhai Poems written by Zheng Luoying in the reign of Qianlong Emperor in the Qing Dynasty that:
As the day turns dark, Minshan Temple becomes bustling,
Outside the temple the moon is glowing.
While chewing betel nuts or smoking small-bowled long-stemmed pipes,
People enjoy Shifan music juniors are enthusiastically playing.
From the verse, it could be seen that Shifan music was quite popular at Fuzhou at that time. once upon a time, dragon dance prevailed in Fuzhou. Later on, the percussion music accompanied by the dragon dance gradually separated from the dragon dance, forming an independent artistic form. The instruments it used were Langzhang (an instrument), big and small gongs, and big and small cymbals. To avoid the monotony of the five-instrument combination, Chinese bamboo flutes, Douguan (an instrument shaped like a pipe), Yehu, and other orchestras are employed. Meanwhile, Qinggu and Chinese gong chimes are also used. In order to achieve volume balance, almost ten types of orchestras are provided in even numbers, for example, double Chinese bamboo flutes, double pipes, double Erhu. By then, a band has formed initially.
Chating Shifan music can be represented by such typical pieces as Moon over Qin Tower (Qin Lou Yue), Sky under Water (Shui Di Tian), Volume of Lotus Flower (Lian Gua Ce), Cloud formed with Wild Goose Came by (Yan Lai Yun), Pomegranate Blossoms (Shi Liu Hua), etc.
Besides Fuzhou, Chating Shifan music is also popular in rural areas surrounding it and the subordinate five districts and six counties, and even in Ningde, Jianyang, Nanping, Gutian, Fu'an, Zherong, and Xiapu as well.
Chating Shifan music can be performed with the performers either sitting down or walking. but their position in the chorus is subject to particular arrangement. It's mainly performed in folk activities such as Yingshen Saihui (a folk festival in honor of a deity whose statue is carried through the streets of a village in a procession), weddings and funerals, and family feasts. Most of its themes are associated with the relationship between human and nature and society, or artistic conception, or ancient tales.
