China had 190 million people at or above the age of 60 at the end of last year, according to the China National Committee on Ageing (CNCA). It is estimated the number of Chinese senior citizens is expected to skyrocket from the current 185 million to 487 million, or 35 percent of the population, by 2053.
去年，根据全国老龄办统计，中国60岁以上的老人有一亿九千万。据估计，中国老年人口将由目前的1.85亿递增到2053年的4.87亿峰值，人口老龄化水平将由目前的13.7%逐年增加到世纪中叶的35%左右，人口老龄化形势愈发严峻。
"The aging problem came late to China and the country is still struggling to create mature policies addressing the issue," Zhu Yong, vice director of the committee, said Monday at a seminar on aging held by the committee, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and HelpAge International.
全国老龄办副主任朱勇指出，为了延缓中国老龄化，中国政府应该积极完善法规制度解决问题。
China had about 185 million people above the age of 60, or 13.7 percent of the population, as of the end of 2011 year. The figure is expected to surge to 221 million in 2015, including 51 million "empty nesters," or elderly people whose children no longer live with them.
2011年底，全国60岁以上老年人口达到1.85亿，占总人口的13.7%。2012年这个数据预计能激增至2亿2100万，其中包括5100万空巢老人和一些孤寡老人。
Zhu urged authorities to draw experience from developed countries in order to reduce uncertainties and risks.

At the seminar, experts recommended improving economic and health support, building more facilities for urban and rural senior residents, encouraging them to participate in social activities and establishing a medical treatment network for the aging population.
在研讨会上，专家们指出应完善老年人供养体系建设，加强城乡老龄设施建设，完善“新农合”制度、城镇居民基本医疗保险制度和城镇职工基本医疗保险制度，推进老年医疗卫生服务网点建设。
Figures from UNFPA show that out of the global population, one out of every nine people is at or above the age of 60. The ratio is expected to climb to one in five by 2050.
从全国老龄办的数据显示，目前，全球9个人中就有一人年龄在60岁以上，根据预测，2050年将上升到全球每5人中有一人，而在中国将为每3人有一人。
