Cliff Painted for Fengshui 风水

Feng shui is serious business for some people in China. The ancient art has led men onto the path of corruption and, in extreme cases, driven them to a crazy state.

The cliff-face of a 900-meter cliff(悬崖) covering a surface area of nearly 2,000 square meters has been painted(涂上) with green paint(绿漆) in Qijiang County in Chongqing in southwest of China.

A local resident surnamed Yang(姓杨的), claims that the former white color of the cliff-face had a negative influence(负面影响) on the Fengshui(风水) of his house. Therefore, he had commissioned the massive painting project.

Local authorities have set out to investigate(展开调查) the case and the extent of damage to the natural environment(自然环境).

风水 fēng shuǐ

The word is literally made of 风(wind) and 水(water), but it's actually a system of ancient Chinese knowledge, which is mainly used to orient dwellings and tombs. It helps pick locations, directions and designs. Some people believe Feng shui is capable of affecting the fate of a family and future of younger generations. Feng shui is more or less based on science, being closely related to astronomy and geography and directly connected with traditional Chinese philosophies as tai chi(太极) and the octagonal diagram.

The main concept of feng shui is the harmony between man and nature. Feng shui studies consider basic conditions heaven, earth, wind and water namely human beings rely on to survive. Therefore, people must remain in harmonious contact with them.
