The performance of the actors and setting on the stage are mainly symbolic.
You don’t see a horse on the stage but a whip in the hand of the actor and several actors stand in a line representing a whole army.
And there are four main kinds of characters: “Sheng, Dan, Jing, Chou”.

All of these are performed rhythmical measured and orderly.
In the accompany band the musical instruments fall into two categories: “Wu Chang” and “Wen Chang”.
“Wu Chang” is percussion instruments while “Wen Chang” is string instruments.
Here we are working at the four major instruments of the “Wen Chang”.
“Wen Cheng” is famous for the dancing and singing rather than fighting.
So the first one is called “San Xian” you get three strings over there, and this is called "Yue Qin", literally it’s a moon instrument, wooden instrument looks likes a full moon.
And this piece is called “Jing Er Hu”, and this is called “Jing Hu”.

And these are the instruments for “Wu Chang”.
And this is called “Tang Gu”, a drum.
And this is “Dan Pi Gu”.
Actually, this gentlemen is like a conductor of an orchestra, so he is in charge of the rhythm, of the music, of the combination of the music.
And this is “Da Luo”, it is a big gong.
And this is “Nao Bo”, cymbals, and that is “Xiao Luo”.
So these are the instruments for “Wu Chang”, which are also very important in Beijing opera.
The accompaniment of music builds up the atmosphere of the whole story as well as goes with the performance of the actors.
So delicately that it can go with the sudden movement of the eyes, the blinks and even the trembling of the hands as well as, of course the emotional expression of the characters.
Beijing opera is an integrated performing art on the Chinese stage.
