Cultural Background
Beijing´s Taxis
In central Beijing, taxis can usually be hailed easily on the street, but not on Chang an Avenue. Because the part of Chang An Avenue from Fuxingmen to Jianguomen doesn't allow vacant taxis and prohibits taxis from stopping. It's not unusual to see foreigners standing along Chang An Avenue waiting and waving in frustration, but no taxi stops. This is because they don't know about the regulation. If you want to take a taxi near Chang An Avenue, you'd better stand by assistant road and wave to a taxi driver. Beijing's taxis are usually Xiali, VW Jetta, Citroen, Santana, Crown models. Taxi drivers are mostly in uniform, the taxi's are topped with signs in English and Chinese, on the sides of the taxi doors are printed the name of the taxi company. Every taxi has an information sign for passengers, as well as fare meters and mileage meters. At present,Beijing's taxis charge by the kilometer, prices range from 1.2 Yuan, 1.6 Yuan to 2 Yuan. Sometimes irregular taxis (referred to as "black cars") appear on the streets of Beijing, that is, private cars deciding to take passengers, under these circumstances one should take note of the number plates. Normal taxi plates are 京B×× ×××, taxis are fitted with top lights and on the right hand side of the dashboard should be a service label, printed with the driver's name, the company's name and its phone number.
