Grains in hand, no worry  in heart. — Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao descriped so on China’s agricultural policy when he was on a spring planting inspection trip in Hebei Province on April 5th. Wen said the country’s self-reliance in feeding its 1.3 billion people with its own grain production was a great contribution to the world. The government had already taken a series of measures to support farm and rural sectors.

Inflation – Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao stressed that inflation was now the top concern for China’s 1.3 billion people, pledging to take steps to slow the Asian giant’s red-hot economic growth rate in 2008.

Stamp tax — The Chinese government on April 24 announced it is to cut the share trading stamp tax from 0.3 percent to 0.1 percent from April 24 in an effort to boost the equities market, which has fallen 46 percent from its high on October 16.

5. 火炬传递 huǒjù chuándì

Torch relay — Under the theme of “Journey of Harmony,” the Beijing Olympic torch relay started its worldwide journey on April 1, 2008. The torch will arrive in Beijing for the opening ceremony on August 8.

Bird Nest — The Beijing National Stadium, also known as the bird’s nest will be the main track and field stadium for the 2008 Summer Olympics and will be host to the Opening and Closing ceremonies. The stadium will seat as many as 100,000 spectators during the Olympics, but this will be reduced to 80,000 after the games.

The fifth leg of the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay kicked off at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France on April 7. Here, a 27-year-old woman named Jin Jing, the third torchbearer in the relay, garnered much attention from media for her bravery.

Carrying the torch on the new course along the Seine River, Jin demonstrated great valor when a “pro-Tibet independence” activist, attempting to disrupt and sabotage the torch relay, reached for her wheelchair and lunged toward her. Without concern for her own safety, Jin did her best to protect the flame, her face exhibiting courage and pride in spite of the chaotic situation. In that moment, it was easy to see why her friends call her the “smiling angel in a wheelchair.”

两会 liǎnghuì

两会 liǎnghuì (two meetings): 两 liǎng means TWO; and 会 huì means meeting / conference / session.
