Guan Yu, born in Xieliang, Hedong (now Yuncheng, Shanxin) was a prominent general in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. Changsheng was his courtesy name before it was changed to Yunchang. Guan, as one of Liu Bei’s most trusted generals, had begun to follow Liu Bei since Liu Bei’s gathering countrymen for an uprising. Following his death, Guan Yu was deified, revered as “Lord Guan” and was respectfully titled a “Saint of War”, which is of the same rank as Confucius, who was known as the “Saint of Culture”. Guan Yu was depicted in sufficiently generous terms in the long historical novel called Romance of the Three Kingdoms, wher he was described as the head of “Five Tiger Generals”. He was referred to as “the most faithful person to friends” in the “The three ‘most’” in the Romance of Three Kingdoms by Mao Zonggang.
