韩愈(768-824),字退之,汉族,唐河内河阳(今河南孟县)人,世称韩昌黎。唐代古文运动的倡导者,为唐宋八大家之首,与柳宗元并称"韩柳",有"文章巨公"和"百代文宗"之名,著有《韩昌黎集》四十卷,《外集》十卷,《师说》等等。
Han Yu (768-824), of the Han nationality, from Henei, Heyang (what is now Mengxian county in Henan province), was courtesy named Tuizhi and generally known as Han Changli. He was one of the initiators of the Ancient Chinese Prose Movement of the Tang Dynasty and was the top among the Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties. He was co-named as Han-Liu with Liu Zongyuan, because both of them were so important in this literary stream. He enjoyed the titles of Giant of Articles and Originator of Writing. He wrote the 40 volumes Han Changli's Collected Works and the 10 volumes Side Collection, as well as On the Teacher, etc.
