Chinese President Xi Jinping has advised young people to avoid staying up (熬夜áo yè) late or becoming too stressed at work when meeting with the country's county-level officials.
It would be a good idea to follow Papa Xi's advice and go to bed on time. For fun though, how many ways can you think of to say "sleep"(睡觉shuì jiào)in Chinese?
1. 眯一会 mī yī huì
我想在开会前先眯一会。
I want to catch a wink before the meeting.
2. 打盹 dǎ dǔn
饭后打个盹会让头脑更清醒,学习效率更高。
A post-meal snooze sets the brain up for learning.
3.小睡 xiǎo shuì
如果可以小睡片刻,我想我就会觉得好多了。
If I could take a little catnap, I think I'd feel much better.
4. 打地铺 dǎ dì pù
他太累了,打地铺睡了整整一天。
He was so tired that he slept on the floor for a whole day.
5.回笼觉huí lóng jiào
我真走运,睡了30分钟的回笼觉上班还没迟到。
I'm lucky that I was not late for work after having 30 minutes of unprotected sleep. (*note: ‘unprotected sleep’ refers to the act of turning off one’s alarm clock and immediately going back to sleep; thus risking not waking up for a job, class, or other daily tasks)
6.打瞌睡 dǎ kēshuì
有些学生常在课堂上打瞌睡。
Some students often doze off in class.
7. 沉睡chén shuì
她沉睡着,连爆炸声都没有把她吵醒。
She slept so soundly that the explosion didn't wake her up.
8. 睡觉轻shuìjiào qīng
我睡觉轻,很容易醒的。
I'm a light sleeper, and I wake up quite easily.
9. 睡懒觉shuì lǎn jiào
周末我通常会睡个懒觉,到中午才起来。
I sleep in every weekend and wake up around noon.
10. 自然醒 zì rán xǐng
放寒假了,他每天都睡到自然醒。
It’s the winter vacation, and he can sleep until he wakes up naturally every day.
