壮锦历史极为悠久，壮族先民在汉代织出的"斑布"就是其前身。中华人民共和国成立后，考古工作者在广西罗泊湾汉墓的七号残葬坑内发掘出土了数块橘红色回纹锦残片，证实汉代广西已有织锦技艺。
Zhuang brocade has a long history. As early as Han Dynasty, the ancestors of Zhuang nationality brocaded "banbu" (ceiba cloth), which was the predecessor of Zhuang brocade. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, archaeological workers unearthed several orange brocade fragments in meander patterns from No. 7 grave pit of Luobowan Han dynasty tombs in Guangxi and proved that brocade weaving skills appeared in Guangxi in Han Dynasty.
壮锦技艺形成于唐宋时代，明清时期进一步发展，在明代列为贡品，清末民初，壮锦开始衰落。历经千余年发展的壮锦有自成体系的三大种类、二十多个品种和五十多种图案，以结实耐用、技艺精巧、图案别致、花纹精美著称。
Zhuang brocade weaving skills were formed in Tang and Song dynasties and developed further in Ming and Qing dynasties. Zhuang brocade was used as tributes in Ming Dynasty. But it began to decline at the end of Qing Dynasty to the beginning of the Republic of China. Zhuang brocade has its own system covering more than 50 patterns in more than 20 types of three categories through its development over a thousand of years. It is famous for robustness and durability, delicate craftsmanship, unconventional designs and exquisite patterns.
壮锦是壮族的优秀文化遗产之一，它不仅可为我国少数民族纺织技艺的研究提供生动的实物材料，还可以为中国乃至世界的纺织史增添活态的例证，对继承和弘扬民族文化，增强民族自尊心起到积极的作用。然而，由于历史和现实等多方面的原因，壮锦面临着严峻的传承危机，急需抢救和保护。
As one of the outstanding cultural heritages in Zhuang nationality, Zhuang brocade not only provides lively physical material for research of minority nationality textile skills in China but also contributes living example to the textile history in and beyond China. Therefore, it plays an active role in succeeding and developing national culture as well as in boosting national pride. However, Zhuang brocade faces severe crisis of succession and is in urgent need of retrieval and protection due to multiple reasons in history, reality and other aspects.
