Meri Snow Mountain towers over the scene wher the world famous Jinsha River, Lancang River and Nu River flow together. It’s a gigantic snowy series of mountains, ranging from north to south. The northern section is called Meri Snow-capped Mountain, the middle section Prince Snow-capped Mountain and the southern section Biluo Snow-capped Mountain. It connects to Mount Adonggeni of Tibet in the north. It consists of a total of 13 mountains higher than 6,000 meters in elevation and known as the “13 Princely Peaks”.

Meri Snow Mountain is famous for its towering splendor and mystery. Its main peak, Kagebo, is 6,740 meters in elevation, the highest in Yunnan Province. It’s the guardian spirit of Jiajuba, a branch of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. The peak resembles a magnificent pyramid. A floating sea of clouds covers the snow capped mountain with yet another mysterious veil. It is referred to as the “god of the snow mountain” and one of the “8 mysterious mountains in Tibet”.

Aside from the “13 Princely Peaks”, here you may also view ?the various characteristic sceneries of snow-capped mountains. On the southern face of Kagebo Peak a huge waterfall pours down from a 1,000-meter cliff, it is most spectacular in summer. Four glaciers, Mingyong, Sinong, Niuba and Nongsong, appear like jade dragons, spreading and glittering in the snow.

Yubeng Village is the best-preserved of early Tibetan villages, at the foot of Meri Snow-capped Mountain. Qudenggong Temple and Gunmading Temple are the sites at which Tibetans worship the mysterious mountains. Hundreds of Tibetans will drive their sheep, take up their walking sticks, recite the sutra, burn incense sticks and walk around the mountain as autumn becomes winter. This scene of worship is most spectacular. If, according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, it is the Year of the Sheep, “worshipers will multiply by their dozens” for they believe that the God of Meri Snow Mountain was born in the Year of the Sheep. It is said that this activity has been held for over 700 years. In addition, the path that millions of worshipers have beaten over hundreds of years still remains in its original state.

The world’s highest peak Mount Qomolangma has received brave climbers, but Meri Snow-capped Mountain remains veiled by mystery. Ever since a British mountaineering expedition failed to climb Kagebo Peak at the beginning of the 20th century, no one has made it to the summit. It remains un-scaled in over 100 years. In 1991, 17 members of a Sino-Japanese mountaineering expedition died in a snow slide from Kagebo Peak, being the second most serious accident in the history of mountaineering. In 1996, after another failure, the Chinese government issued an order which forbade the climbing of Meri Snow-capped Mountain.
