退堂鼓 tuì táng gǔ
退堂鼓是指古代官员停止办公,退出大堂的时候敲的鼓。不过,现在说的“打退堂鼓”就是指做事中途改变主意,或者因为害怕困难而不想干了。这是汉语中的惯用语。
The set phrase "tuitanggu" refers to the drumbeat that was sounded when ancient officials ended a day's work. But nowadays when we say "da tuitang gu", it means changing your mind in the middle of doing something or deciding not to do something because you are afraid. It is a common set phrase in Chinese.
Example:
shì qíng jì rán yǐ jīng dìng le ,jiù yào jiān chí gàn xià qù。jué bù néng dǎ tuì táng gǔ。
事 情 既 然 已 经 定 了,就 要 坚 持 干 下 去。绝 不 能 打 退 堂 鼓。
Since it's been decided, we should persist in carrying it out. We should never "da tuitanggu".
