Vegetarians are usually confident about the health benefits of their meat-free diets. But an extensive new study from Australia suggests that vegetarians are most physically healthy but face a host of psychological issues.
Findings of the latest Alere Wellness Index show vegetarians outperforming meat eaters in terms of their nutrition, fitness, overall health, alcohol and tobacco consumption, but more prone to depression and anxiety.
based on a Roy Morgan Research questionnaire of 50,000 Australians, Dr John Lang, who developed the wellness index for preventive healthcare company Alere, said that while the attention needed to follow a vegetarian diet produced physical health benefits, it also left them with lower scores for psychological wellbeing, less optimistic, more likely to suffer panic attacks, anxiety and depression.
“Although they get the good health, lower Body Mass Index and better nutrition scores, their psych scores are down because they are a selec group who are obsessive enough to stick with the strict regime,” Dr Lang said.
