Wang Fuzhi, also called Wang Chuanshan, was a master of the system of Chinese Simple Materialism by inheriting and further developing the materialism of his predecessors. Wang, together with Huang Zongxi and Gu Yanwu were collectively known as the three major thinkers of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Wang spent his later years at Shichuanshan at the foot of Hengshan Mountain in writing books to expound his theories, and hence gained his alternative name, “Scholar Chuanshan”. Wang Fuzhi wrote lots of works throughout his life, with Du Tongjian Lun (Comments on “History as a Mirror”) and Song Lun (On the Song Dynasty) as his representative works.
