Porcelain Pillows
March 21 is "World Sleeping Day", an event created by the World Health Organization. Shanxi Museum has kindly shared with us a few pictures related to porcelain pillows, so let's take a brief look at the history of porcelain pillows in China.
Pillows are necessities within people's daily life. Chinese ancient pillows were first made of natural stones and later the materials used extended to wood, jade, bronze, bamboo, and porcelain. Among these pillows, porcelain pillows were the most widely used.
Porcelain pillows first appeared in the Sui Dynasty (581-618) and their mass production began in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Porcelain pillows reached their climax in terms of production and use during the Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties (10th-14th centuries) and were gradually phased out in the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) with the emergence of better materials with which to make pillows.
