The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the 29th Olympiad (BOCOG) seleced 297 beauties from a dozen Beijing colleges to act as the hostesses of the awarding ceremonies.
The ceremonies has been designed with many traditional Chinese elements. The hostesses has been trained to be beauties both inside and outside. The young women, with a classical Chinese temperament, will send messages of Chinese implicit beauty in each simple move as taught in the classes. Their silk costumes are also designed with traditional Chinese cultural images such as blue-and-white porcelain, embroidery and jade.

The outfits and accessories to be worn at the Olympic medal ceremonies were unveiled in Beijing on 17th July 2008. Five series of costumes will be worn by the hostesses at the total of 302 medal ceremonies.
Each series was designed for certain sport events and each costume features three styles of outfits - tray holders, medal presenter escorts and athlete escorts.

The five series are named respectively:

- “Royal blue” (宝蓝 bǎolán)- designed for medal ceremonies in gymnastics, indoor ball games (including table tennis) and fencing.
- “Sophora green” (国槐绿 guóhuái lǜ) - designed for medal ceremonies in cycling, shooting, modern pentathlon.
- “Grease white” (玉脂白 yùzhī bái) - designed for medal ceremonies in the National Stadium, outdoor ball games and equestrianism in Hong Kong.
- “Pink” (粉红 fěn hóng) - designed for medal ceremonies in sports requiring power and energy, such as boxing, weightlifting and wrestling. This feminine and graceful color could make a neutralizing effect to these masculine sports.
