Renowned Translator Passed Away

Renowned(著名) Chinese translator(翻译家), litterateur(文学家) and playwright(剧作家) Yang Jikang, or better known as Yang Jiang(杨绛), passed away(逝世) early on Wednesday morning in Beijing. She was 105.

As one of China's most accomplished women, Yang Jiang enjoyed decades of fame(声誉) and respect(尊重) across the country for her literature(文学) and translation(翻译) masterpieces(杰作).

After marrying famous Chinese litterateur Qian Zhongshu(钱钟书) in 1935 and studying abroad along with her husband in the United Kingdom and France, Yang mastered English and French. She also learnt Spanish later, which laid(打造) a good foundation(基础) for her translation works.

Yang Jiang was the first Chinese to produce a complete(完整的) Chinese version(版本) of The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (《堂吉诃德》also known as Don Quixote,) from the Spanish original.
