安塞腰鼓历史悠久，但产生形成的具体时代至今已难考证。以鼓报警，以鼓助威，以鼓告急，以鼓为乐，这些都是安塞腰鼓的功能。安塞腰鼓分文鼓与武鼓两种，文鼓以扭为主，重扭轻打；武鼓以打为主，重打轻扭。
The Ansai yaogu (lit., 'waist drum') has a long history, but it is very difficult to identify its exact time of origin. It features cheering, alarm sounds and music. The Ansai yaogu performance can be classified into the wengu performance and wugu performance. During the wengu performance, dancers swing a great deal and play drums intermittently; while during the wugu performance, dancers spend most of the time playing drums and swing at certain intervals.
安塞腰鼓快放快收，变化神速，自然大方，欢快流畅，刚柔并济，屈伸自如，在发展演变过程中将舞蹈、武术、体操、打击乐、吹奏乐、民歌等融为一体，使自身从内容到形式更加丰富，更具观赏性、娱乐性。
While playing the drums, dancers complete each motion and change gestures very quickly; and also bend and stretch theirs limbs freely. This natural and aesthetic performance conveys happiness and combines both hardness and softness.
The Ansai yaogu has integrated dance, martial arts, gymnastics, percussion music, band music and folk songs during the course of its development, giving it richer content and more diversified forms, and providing the audience with greater aesthetic enjoyment.
安塞腰鼓是黄河文化的组成部分，是陕北汉子剽悍、虎劲、牛劲的体现，极具民族风格和地域特色。
The performance is an integral part of Yellow River culture. It reflects the agility, bravery, drive, and strong will of the people living in the north of Shaanxi province. The performance possesses significant national style and local flavor.
目前安塞腰鼓的现实生存状况令人担忧，需要对它实行保护和扶持。
However, the survival of the Ansai yaogu may be in jeopardy, and support and protection is required.
