  After finishing filming in

  Liaoning Province,

  in accordance with our schedule,

  now we've arrived

  in Hebei, the second province

  we're going

  to travel on Happy Journey

  across China.

One of the biggest pleasures of

  this journey

is to go with the caravan and

  experience

  for ourselves the excitement of

  driving along coast.

Soon we had fulfilled our wish

and reached the first stop in

  Hebei Province-

  Laolongtou of Qinhuangdao.

Learn Chinese the fun way and have

  a happy journey across China!

Hello there! I'm Merry Han Jia.

  And I'm Happy Wang Yuanyuan.

The first leg of our Qinhuangdao trip

  will start from Laolongtou.

  Look at the ancient structure

  over there.

  That is Laolongtou.

  Let's go over there.

  Actually I don't understand

  why it's called Laolongtou

  (old dragon's head).

  It has something to do

  with its geographical location.

Laolongtou is the eastern end of the Ming

Dynasty Great Wall extending into the sea.

If you compare the Great Wall

  to a 5,000-kilometer-long dragon,

  the section on the sea

would be like the dragon's head

  drinking water.

Han Jia, there must be very few sections

of the Great Wall that extend so

  deep into the sea.

  To be more exact,

it is the only section of the Great Wall

  that extends into the sea.

"If are not a real man unless you have

  climbed the Great Wall."

I've been a real man for several times.

But this section of the Great Wall

  is different from the rest.

  What you said just now

can be expressed with a set phrase,

  "yu zhong bu tong".

Let me explain with an example.

  Zhè duàn chángchéng yǔzhòngbùtóng

This section of the Great Wall is

  different from the rest.

  Have you learned it?

  After leaving Laolongtou,

  we're certainly heading for

the so-called First Pass under Heaven,

  Shanhaiguan.

  The Shanhaiguan Pass was built

  in 1381, known as

one of China's three most impregnable

  passes,with the other two being

  the Juyongguan Pass and

  the Jiayuguan Pass.

  On Shanghaiguan's east gate,

  Zhenyuan Tower,

  the most eye-catching sight

is perhaps this plaque bearing the words

  "First Pass under Heaven".

Han Jia, why, the more I look at it,

the more strange I find this plaque to be!

  How strange is this plaque?

To the best of my knowledge,

  all Chinese calligraphic works

  bear signatures and seals.

  But except the five characters,

  this plaque doesn't bear anything

like a signature or a seal.

  It is really strange!

  You observed very carefully.

  I observed very "zixi".

To do something "zixi" is to do something

  carefully or meticulously.

  Now let's explain

  with an example.

Wǒ bǐ nǐ guānchá de gèng zǐxì

I observed more carefully than you.

  Anyway,

I think the plaque is a bit strange,

  which should be considered my

  biggest discovery.

  This plaque

was written by Xiao Xian, a calligrapher

  of the Ming Dynasty.

He wrote all the characters well

  except the word "yi".

He couldn't write the simplest character

  "yi" well?

No. But a waiter in a restaurant

  gave him some inspiration

when he was wiping a table with a rag.

A mark of water was left on the table,

which was exactly the style of "yi"

  Xiao Xian desired to produce.

  So he instantly copied this

  mark of water

  onto the plaque.

  Oh, I see.

  This waiter was so great!

I'll practice with a rag, too,

  from now on.

There wouldn't be such an easy

  thing to do!

  Why you look so spellbound,

  Han Jia?

I was trying to figure out the structure

  of this wall.

  Really? What did you find?

  For instance, these protruding

  structures ...

  They should be used for...

  For the discharge of water!

  Were you racking your brains

  only for this?

Not exactly. Actually I was wondering

why the openings of these tubes

  was built toward the city?

  Just imagine.

  This was a defensive wall.

If they were built toward the outside,

the enemy troops would climb up

  by taking hold of them.

You seem to quite understand warfare.

  Thank you. I'm flattered!

  Don't put on airs.

Let me tell you the truth.

  The structure reflects a saying,

  which goes ...

  "Good things should be kept

  from outsiders."

  Actually you know this!

  Sure.

In English refers to keeping good things

  from outsiders.

  That's basically the meaning of

  this saying.

When we mention the Great Wall,

we couldn't tell the names of

  those builders.

But we'll all recall the legendary woman,

Meng Jiangnu, who cried until a section

  of the Great Wall collapsed.

  Therefore, my colleagues suggested that

I must go take a look at Meng

  Jiangnu Temple.

The story about Meng Jiangnu crying

  at the Great Wall

  has moved many people.

Come have a look at this

  pair of scrolls.

The sea water falls back to the east

  every morning.

The cloud grows bigger but gradually

  it disappears.

But it is really tiring to read them.

It's of course tiring if you read

  like that.

  The crux of this couplet

  lies in the multi-pronunciation characters

  and proper pauses.

  Look, the word "chao"

  is a multi-pronunciation character.

It may read "chao" and "zhao"

  as well.

And the word "chang" also has

  more than one pronunciation.

It may read "chang" and "zhang"

  as well.

If I read the lines pausing after the third,

  sixth and tenth character,

it should sound like "Hai shui chao,

  zhao zhao chao,

  zhao chao zhao luo."

And that scroll should read "Fu yun zhang,

  chang chang zhang,

  chang zhang chang xiao".

  May it also read like

  "Hai shui zhao zhao chao,

  zhao chao zhao chao luo."

  "Fu yun chang chang zhang,

  chang zhang chang chang xiao?"

  You are smart, Yuanyuan!

There should be other ways of

  reading them.

Hai shui zhao zhao chao chao,

  zhao zhao chao luo ...

  Did you realize that

  there are several ways

  of reading a simple couplet.

  You better enjoy today's Feast

  for the Eyes

so that we can have more time

to figure out how to read this couplet.

  See you later.

Known as the First Pass under Heaven,

  Shanghaiguan was of military importance

  in ancient times.

It was regarded as one of China's three great

impregnable passes, with the other two being

  Juyongguan and Jiayuguan.

The Great Wall is an embodiment of

  history and wisdom.

Laolongtou is the only section of the

Great Wall that extends into the sea.

It is unique in design and spectacular

  in grandeur.

The Chenghai Tower on top the "Dragon's Head"

is the hallmark of this section of the Wall.

  This ancient defense bulwark

attracted emperors and men of letters

  of various dynasties.

They were amazed at the vast sea to

  its south

and the magnificence of this Old Dragon's Head.

  No, no.

  Yuanyuan, turn it off.

If we go on discussing like this,

we won't have the time for today's

  award-winning question.

  That's right.

  And tomorrow,

we'll take a look at the place

wher China's first emperor paid homage

to the sea and sought a magic drug.

  If you're interested,

  you mustn't miss it.

At the end of this program,

we'd like to still remind our audience

  not to forget our slogan:
