万里海疆快乐行第21集：老龙头[lǎo lóng tóu]

　旁白： 结束了辽宁省的拍摄之后，

　　我们按照计划，来到了这次

　　就要从老龙头开始了。

　　其实我一直不明白，

　　Actually I don't understand

　　为什么这里叫老龙头呢。

　　why it's called Laolongtou

　　(old dragon's head).

　　韩佳： 这个呢

　　It has something to do

　　跟它的地理位置有关。

　　with its geographical location.

　　老龙头是明长城的东端入海处。

　　Laolongtou is the eastern end of the Ming

　　Dynasty Great Wall extending into the sea.

　　那如果说把长城比喻成

　　If you compare the Great Wall

　　一条万里长龙的话，

　　to a 5,000-kilometer-long dragon,

　　那入海处的这段长城呢

　　the section on the sea

　　恰好是喝水的龙头了。

　　would be like the dragon's head

　　drinking water.

　　王渊源：韩佳，像这样深入大海的长城

　　不过，就数今天看的这段长城

　　韩佳： 你刚才说的这个意思啊，

　　用中文的一个成语来说呢

　　can be expressed with a set phrase,

　　就是与众不同。

　　"yu zhong bu tong".

　　举个例子来说吧。

　　Let me explain with an example.

　　Zhè duàn chángchéng yǔzhòngbùtóng

　　这 段 长城 与众不同。

　　This section of the Great Wall is

　　different from the rest.

　　王渊源：您学会了吧？

　　旁白： 离开了老龙头，

　　After leaving Laolongtou,

　　我们自然是要往号称

　　we're certainly heading for

　　“天下第一关”的山海关进发了。

　　the so-called First Pass under Heaven,

　　Shanhaiguan.

　　山海关建于1381年，

　　The Shanhaiguan Pass was built

　　in 1381, known as

　　与居庸关、嘉峪关

　　one of China's three most impregnable

　　passes,with the other two being

　　并称“中国三大雄关”。

　　the Juyongguan Pass and

　　the Jiayuguan Pass.

　　登上这山海关的东门镇远楼，

　　On Shanghaiguan's east gate,

　　Zhenyuan Tower,

　　最吸引人的，恐怕就是这块

　　the most eye-catching sight

　　“天下第一关”的牌匾了。

　　is perhaps this plaque bearing the words

　　"First Pass under Heaven".

　　王渊源：韩佳，你说我怎么

　　Han Jia, why, the more I look at it,

　　越看这个匾额越觉得奇怪啊！

　　the more strange I find this plaque to be!

　　韩佳： 这个匾额怎么奇怪了？

　　How strange is this plaque?

　　王渊源：反正据我所知，

　　To the best of my knowledge,

　　中国的书法都讲究落款和用印。

　　all Chinese calligraphic works

　　bear signatures and seals.

　　你看这匾上，就五个大字，

　　But except the five characters,

　　一没有落款，二没有用印。

　　this plaque doesn't bear anything

　　like a signature or a seal.

　　挺奇怪的呀！

　　It is really strange!

　　韩佳： 你观察得还真仔细呀。

　　You observed very carefully.

　　王渊源：观察得还真仔细。

　　I observed very "zixi".

　　“仔细”是形容做什么事很小心、谨慎。

　　To do something "zixi" is to do something

　　carefully or meticulously.

　　韩佳： 那我们现在呢

　　Now let's explain

　　就举个例子来说吧。

　　with an example.

　　Wǒ bǐ nǐ guānchá de gèng zǐxì

　　我 比 你 观察 得 更 仔细。

　　I observed more carefully than you.

　　王渊源：不管怎么说，

　　Anyway,

　　反正我觉得这个东西有点儿奇怪，

　　I think the plaque is a bit strange,

　　而且这个算是我的一个很大的一个发现。

　　which should be considered my

　　biggest discovery.

　　韩佳： 这块匾呢

　　This plaque

　　是名明代的书法家肖显题写的。

　　was written by Xiao Xian, a calligrapher

　　of the Ming Dynasty.

　　当年他写好了其他的四个字，

　　He wrote all the characters well

　　可唯独这个“一”字呢写不好。

　　except the word "yi".

　　王渊源：最简单的“一”字

　　He couldn't write the simplest character

　　写不好啊？

　　"yi" well?

　　韩佳： 对啊。不过有一个店小二

　　No. But a waiter in a restaurant

　　用抹布擦桌子的时候

　　gave him some inspiration

　　倒给肖显带来了灵感。

　　when he was wiping a table with a rag.

　　桌子上面留下了一道水印，

　　A mark of water was left on the table,

　　正是肖显想要的“一”字。

　　which was exactly the style of "yi"

　　Xiao Xian desired to produce.

　　于是，他赶紧把这道水印

　　So he instantly copied this

　　mark of water

　　用在了匾额上。

　　onto the plaque.

　　王渊源：原来是这么回事啊。

　　Oh, I see.

　　这店小二可真厉害啊！

　　This waiter was so great!

　　回去我也找块抹布去练练。

　　I'll practice with a rag, too,

　　from now on.

　　韩佳： 哪有那么容易的事儿啊！

　　There wouldn't be such an easy

　　thing to do!

　　王渊源：韩佳，好好的你发什么呆呀？

　　Why you look so spellbound,

　　Han Jia?

　　韩佳： 我在研究城墙的结构设计呢。

　　I was trying to figure out the structure

　　of this wall.

　　王渊源：是吗？研究出什么了？

　　Really? What did you find?

　　韩佳： 比如，城墙上这些突出的构造，

　　For instance, these protruding

　　structures ...

　　它们应该是...

　　They should be used for...

　　王渊源：排水用的嘛！

　　For the discharge of water!

　　就为这个你研究了这么半天了？

　　Were you racking your brains

　　only for this?

　　韩佳： 不是啊。其实我是在想啊，

　　Not exactly. Actually I was wondering

　　这个排水杵的口

　　why the openings of these tubes

　　为什么是朝里面的呢？

　　was built toward the city?

　　王渊源：你想啊。

　　Just imagine.

　　这可是防御敌人的城墙啊。

　　This was a defensive wall.

　　要是这些东西都建在外面的话，

　　If they were built toward the outside,

　　那敌人不就能抓着它爬上来嘛。

　　the enemy troops would climb up

　　by taking hold of them.

　　韩佳： 看来你还挺懂兵法的嘛。

　　You seem to quite understand warfare.

　　王渊源：过奖过奖。

　　其实啊，告诉你啊。

　　Let me tell you the truth.

　　这里面还暗含着一句话，那就是

　　The structure reflects a saying,

　　which goes ...

　　王渊源：“肥水不流外人田。”

　　"Good things should be kept

　　from outsiders."

　　韩佳： 原来你知道啊！

　　Actually you know this!

　　王渊源：那是。

　　Sure.

　　英语的意思就是，好处不能让给别人。

　　In English refers to keeping good things

　　from outsiders.

　　韩佳： 差不多就是这个意思。

　　That's basically the meaning of

　　this saying.

　　旁白： 提起长城，

　　When we mention the Great Wall,

　　我们说不出每一个建造它的人的名字。

　　we couldn't tell the names of

　　those builders.

　　但是大家一定都会想起那个传说中，

　　But we'll all recall the legendary woman,

　　哭倒了整座长城的孟姜女。

　　Meng Jiangnu, who cried until a section

　　of the Great Wall collapsed.

　　所以，我的同事们建议我

　　你别说念起来还挺累的啊。

　　But it is really tiring to read them.

　　韩佳： 你这么念，当然累了。

　　It's of course tiring if you read

　　like that.

　　那这副对联的学问呢

　　The crux of this couplet

　　就在于多音字和断句。

　　lies in the multi-pronunciation characters

　　and proper pauses.

　　你看，这个“朝”啊

　　Look, the word "chao"

　　就是一个多音字。

　　is a multi-pronunciation character.

　　既可以念“朝”又可以念“朝”。

　　It may read "chao" and "zhao"

　　as well.

　　而那个“长”就又是一个多音字。

　　And the word "chang" also has

　　more than one pronunciation.

　　既可以念“长”又可以念“长”。

　　It may read "chang" and "zhang"

　　as well.

　　那我要是三三四断句的话呢，

　　If I read the lines pausing after the third,

　　sixth and tenth character,

　　就应该是，“海水朝，

　　it should sound like "Hai shui chao,

　　朝朝朝，

　　zhao zhao chao,

　　朝朝朝落。”

　　zhao chao zhao luo."

　　那边就应该是，“浮云长，

　　And that scroll should read "Fu yun zhang,

　　长长长，

　　chang chang zhang,

　　长长长消。”

　　chang zhang chang xiao".

　　王渊源：那是不是也可以这么读：

　　May it also read like

　　“海水朝朝朝，

　　"Hai shui zhao zhao chao,

　　朝朝朝朝落。”

　　zhao chao zhao chao luo."

　　“浮云长长长，

　　"Fu yun chang chang zhang,

　　山海关是古代的军事要塞 有“天下第一关”之称

　　Known as the First Pass under Heaven,

　　Shanghaiguan was of military importance

　　in ancient times.

　　它与居庸关 嘉峪关并称中国三大雄关

　　It was regarded as one of China's three great

　　impregnable passes, with the other two being

　　Juyongguan and Jiayuguan.

　　巍巍城墙 凝聚着历史 凝结着智慧

　　They were amazed at the vast sea to

　　尽赏龙头入海的恢弘气势

　　and the magnificence of this Old Dragon's Head.
